What
is a Christmas Market?
This
annual event is patterned after the tradition of Christmas Markets
historically held throughout Europe, but primarily in Eastern European
nations, during the first weeks of December. In the midst of grim
winters, the townspeople loved the bright panoply of the market,
which filled the town squares with the sights and sounds of Christmas.
Shopkeepers in festive stalls would offer baked goods, sweets, toys
and local specialties. Artisans presented their handmade crafts,
nutcrackers, lace and blown glass ornaments. The aromas of roasted
chestnuts, spiced cookies, mulled wine and evergreen vied for your
attention. Over time, each Christmas Market developed its own distinctive
character, not only reflecting local traditions, but also unique
historic backdrops. It is our intention for this event to develop
in the same respect, highlighting everything the Village of Medina
has to offer.
